Finicky Felines

We will touch on a common complaint seen by many cat owners....the cat that won't eat. If you have ever dealt with one of these fussy felines, this can be extremely stressful to an owner. They cannot be trained to eat their food like a dog by only offering that diet and nothing else since hunger will dictate and they will eat when they see nothing else offered. Unfortunately the cat, unless they are good at catching birds or mice, these finicky eaters will literally "not eat" themselves to death. If you have an indoor cat that refuses to eat, then you must try to figure out what they like and keep them interested in food. It is a peculiar and sometimes unexplained behavior in some cats since many feral cats will take any food they can sink their teeth into, including dry dog food, before they will allow themselves to starve to death.

Tip: Cats cannot survive on a dry dog food or canned food, it is nutritionally insufficient. Feed a high quality Cat Food only.

One thing to be vigilant of, if your cat was eating a dry cat food before, then suddenly decides not to, don't panic, it may just be the food turned rancid or you might need to meaty it up with some canned food or a bit of meat from your plate. However, you may need to switch dry foods altogether. Illness, Hairballs, Bladder Stones, Internal Injuries, Senior Years, along with symptoms of Heat Stroke can make your cat stop eating.

Not many cats will turn down a freshly cooked or freshly opened can of meat. If a cat has gone longer than 5 days without eating, you could be faced with a form of feline anorexia. A cat turned off by food can be due to a feeling of nausea brought about by medicines along with the other things mentioned, and then it will be up to you to assist them with beginning to eat again. If getting their eating to reignite doesn't work then a Vet check is in order. At the very least they can get your cat on nutritional support until they feel better and your Vet can determine what is ailing your fuzzy feline.

All The Other Stuff

In our spot on Finicky Felines, we offered you a taste of some of the important stuff you can find in Kitty Korner, along with locating more stuff inside Pet Friendly Place. Things that pertain to dogs and cats alike.

You will learn the do's and don'ts of life with your cat and how there are strong differences between the two species besides the obvious and the not so obvious.

Example: You can give a dog Acetaminophin (Tylenol) for pain relief, but give the same to a cat and it will be an emergency Vet visit for Fluffy due to liver failure and /or fatal blood disorder. Aspirin can also poison a cat due to it still having a half life in their systems for up to 72 hours later so cats can reach a toxic level if given in same dosages as you would a dog or person. This should only be used under the guidance of a Veterinarian. Same goes for a dog as well. Don't administer any medication without your Vet's approval especially medicines designed for humans. Your Vet will have a much more appropriate medication for pain control or for anything else your pet might require.
